What is Forensic Document Examination?

Attorneys, business executives or medical professionals or other individuals may come across a document where the signature doesn't seem true or something in the body of the text is suspicious.

Document examiners investigate how the document was created. They may check the thickness of the paper the disputed document was written on and compare it to a standard; they may compare the questioned signature against several known signatures in order to verify their authenticity; they may investigate the computer, printer, or scanner, or in the case of older documents, the typewriter with which the piece was supposedly made in order to come to an educated conclusion about the document's authenticity or fraudulent nature.

In her book, The Business of Document Examination, Kathie Koppenhaver defines her profession as falling, "under the category of Forensic Sciences which is the application of scientific techniques to detect and prosecute crime or to make determinations in legal proceedings. The field of document examination offers services related to the study of documents or other materials containing written matter. This material includes printed matter, handwriting, hand printing or typewriting."
